Petronas Towers – World’s Tallest Twin Towers

Posted by Jae on January 7, 2009

Petronas Towers I & II

The Petronas Twin Towers are 1998 completed, 88 floor, 452 m dual towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. These were the world’s tallest buildings at its completion, before being surpassed by Taipei 101. However, the towers are still the tallest twin buildings in the world.

In an unusual move, a different construction company was hired for each of the towers. Tower 1 was successfully completed by the Japanese company Hazama Corporation while the builders of Tower 2 were Samsung Engineering & Construction and Kukdong Engineering (both of South Korea.) The Tower 2 construction team succeeded one month earlier than Tower 1.  The towers feature a skybridge between the two towers on 41st and 42nd floors (visitors are only allowed on the 41st floor as the 42nd floor can only be used by the tenants of the building), which is the highest 2-story bridge in the world. The bridge is 170 m above the ground, 58 m long, and weighs about 750 tons.
